The members of the new Lee's Summit Downtown Rotary Club have great enthusiasm and energy.  The founding philosophy of Service Above Self -  established by Paul Harris 1905 is what drives District 6040's newest club.  The club immediately established an outline of local and international programs and charities that would benefit from our fundraising efforts.

Our first inclination was to start at home and choose some local organizations that would benefit from the ideas being resonated by our members.

LSDR club members have their sites set on many local organizations that can benefit from our clubs donation of time, talent, and monetary contributions.  Some of the local organizations who benefit include but are not limited to Pro Deo Youth Center, Hope House, Hillcrest Ministries, Langsford House, Lee's Summit Social Services and One Good Meal.

The first internal effort created by our club is our "Adopt a Family" program.  Every month we choose a family from applications submitted by our members or other local sources that have an immediate need. In its brief existence we have assisted single mothers who are struggling to make ends meet by supplying diapers for infants.  We also reached out by providing a gift card for necessities to a local family who lost everything in a tragic house fire.  We hope to expand this program by adopting 12 families that we can provide groceries and other essentials for during the holiday season in order to alleviate some of the many economic pressures felt at this time of year.

In 2009 we began the organization of the SMOKIN' on the Summit BBQ Competition. The inagural event will be held this June 3-4, 2011 in conjunction with Downtown Days. This is a KCBS sanctioned event and will raise funds for Rotary International and numerous local causes. This event along with our Annual Casino Night will allow our club to fundraise with the force of a 100+ member club. You won't be hard pressed to find bigger clubs in the area but you will be challenged to find a club with a BIGGER heart than the one posessed by the members of the  Lee's Summit Downtown Rotary Club.
International efforts and opportunities for involvement are plenty.  The Lee's Summit Downtown Rotary club has already become involved with the Shoes for Orphan Souls program and plans to make this a main focus for our club on an international program level.  Rotary International offers local clubs many options that are truly rewarding to members including Polio Plus that as a part of the Rotary Foundation has nearly eradicated Polio throughout the world.
The programs of Rotary International can be more closely examined by visiting the programs section on their website.
